When South Australian temperatures climb, a reliable car air-conditioning system is more than a comfort feature. It helps keep the cabin pleasant during summer commutes, country drives and long trips around the Adelaide Hills and beyond.

At Approved Automotive Services, an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre in Newton, we inspect, diagnose and repair automotive air-conditioning systems to help keep you comfortable when the heat sets in.

Your vehicle’s A/C system circulates refrigerant through components including the compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporator. This process removes heat and moisture from the cabin air. If a component develops a fault or refrigerant escapes, cooling performance can suffer.

How Does Your Car’s Air Conditioning Work?

One clear warning sign is air from the vents that feels warmer than usual, even when the system is set to its coldest setting. Other symptoms may include:

Unusual noises when the A/C is switched on.

These symptoms can indicate low refrigerant caused by a leak, a faulty compressor, restricted airflow, a blocked cabin filter or an electrical problem. A musty smell may also point to moisture or microbial growth around the evaporator.

If your A/C is struggling, a professional inspection can identify the cause before unnecessary parts are replaced. Importantly, Australian refrigerant handling requirements mean the system must be checked for leaks before it is regassed. Simply adding refrigerant without identifying and addressing a leak can waste money and allow refrigerant to escape into the atmosphere.

A proper service may include inspecting hoses and connections, checking system pressures, testing components and using suitable leak-detection methods. If a leak is found, repairs should be completed before the system is recharged with the correct refrigerant type and specified quantity. Some modern vehicles use different refrigerants and require specialised equipment and handling procedures.

A faulty A/C system can also affect demisting, cabin comfort and, depending on the vehicle, engine load or hybrid/EV thermal management. Not every cooling issue requires a regas, so diagnosis matters.

Long periods of hot weather, dusty roads and frequent stop-start driving around Newton can place extra demands on your vehicle’s climate-control system. Have the cabin filter checked regularly, keep the condenser area clear of debris where safely accessible, and pay attention to changes in cooling performance. Using the A/C periodically throughout the year can also help keep the system in regular operation, provided it is functioning correctly.

Preventing A/C Trouble in South Australia

Unusual fact: Your car’s air conditioning can help remove moisture from the cabin air, which is why it can be useful for demisting windows even in cooler weather.

Approved Automotive Services have invested in the future with extensive training and in-house research into Hybrid Vehicle Service.

We currently have 4 mechanics certified to work on hybrid cars and we have even purchased an in-house training and research vehicle to sharpen our skills and continue to learn as much as we can about these economical vehicles.

We have undertaken specific training to enable us to expertly undertake Hybrid Service & Maintenance.

Hybrid vehicles are not too different to standard petrol driven cars when it comes to servicing, although obviously there are some factors that need to be taken into account, such as the battery and electric motor. This does not mean however that servicing a hybrid vehicle should cost a lot more, or require you to return it to the dealer you bought it from. We are fully qualified to service your hybrid vehicle right here in our Newton workshop.

Hybrid vehicles recharge the batteries with the power generated by the petrol engine and the regenerative braking system harnesses further energy each time the brakes are used. So obviously it is a good idea to look after the engine and braking system to maximise the amount of energy generated as well as the life of the system. Other things that should be given close attention are wheels and tyres to ensure you are getting the full economic benefit from your hybrid vehicle.

Hybrid vehicles combine the best aspects of a petrol engine and an electric motor. Cars with Electric motors alone tend to be incredibly fuel efficient, but this comes at a cost - namely limited range. They also tend to have very long recharge times which are often a hassle.

Petrol engines are simply not very efficient. Only about a quarter of the fuel they burn is translated into the energy driving the wheels. In fact often only a small percentage of the power produced is actually used much of the time a petrol engine is running.

Hybrid vehicles utilise a petrol engine that is typically smaller than those in standard cars of similar size and combine it with an electric drive system to produce extra power when needed without using additional petrol.

Modern conventional hybrid vehicles recharge the batteries with the power generated by the petrol engine and the regenerative braking system harnesses further energy each time the brakes are used. This means the need to plug them in to recharge the batteries is removed. (Plug-in hybrids, or PHEVS differ for obvious reasons, but that is another story).

Unlike a fully electric car a hybrid vehicle is not as restricted in range, as the petrol engine will keep the battery charging as long as there is fuel in the tank.

Hybrid Car Service - Future Servicing Today

Radiators and cooling systems are integral components of any vehicle, designed to prevent engines from overheating by maintaining optimal temperatures. Understanding how these systems work and the significance of their upkeep can help avoid potential issues, particularly as summer approaches.

The cooling system in a vehicle primarily functions by circulating coolant through the engine. This process involves several components including the radiator, thermostat, water pump, and various hoses. The coolant absorbs heat from the engine and is then cycled through the radiator, where it dissipates the heat before returning to the engine. This continuous loop ensures the engine remains at a safe operating temperature, preventing overheating and subsequent damage.

As temperatures rise during the summer months, the demand on a vehicle's cooling system increases significantly. It is crucial to service the system before this period to ensure its efficiency. Regular maintenance checks can identify potential problems such as leaks, corrosion, or faulty components, which, if left unattended, could lead to system failure.

Over time, contaminants can build up in the coolant, reducing its effectiveness. These impurities, including rust, scale, and other debris, can obstruct the system and impair heat transfer. Coolant flushing is a beneficial maintenance procedure that involves draining the old coolant and flushing the system with a cleaning solution before refilling it with fresh coolant. This process helps maintain the cooling system's efficiency and prolongs its lifespan.

Recognising the symptoms of a failing cooling system can prevent extensive damage. Common indicators include:

A low coolant warning light on the dashboard

Steam or vapour coming from under the bonnet

Failure of an engine's cooling system can lead to various problems, ranging from minor inconveniences to severe engine damage. Overheating can warp engine components, damage the head gasket, and lead to engine seizure. Regular inspections and maintenance are vital to prevent these costly repairs.

Potential Issues and Damage from System Failures
